What to wear for actor headshots?

What to wear for actor headshots  One of the most common questions I get asked about actor headshot photography is ‘what should I wear?’ Though the industry is certainly more flexible and open to contemporary style portraits than it used to be, there are still some very good rules of thumb to follow in order to make sure your actor headshots look professional and that your clothes aren’t distracted the casting director from you.   Colours: Below are my recommendations […]

Actor Headshot Photography with Jenny Jenkins

During last week’s actor headshot photography sessions, I had the pleasure of working with the brilliant Jenny Jenkins: an actor and director based in Stratford-upon-Avon. She has a wealth of classical performance experience having worked for the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and toured with Heartbreak Productions, most recently as Rosaline in Love’s Labours Lost. As a director Jenny runs Bright Particular Productions who’s most recent work includes a site specific performance for Royal Shakespeare Company PILOT Sites. Jenny can be found on […]

Dance Photography: Adam Rutherford

One of my passions outside of photography is dance, particularly contemporary dance. I was therefore really excited to be approached by the director of the RDC Youth dance company, Adam Rutherford, to do a portfolio of dance photography images for him. With formal dance training, international performances, residencies, coaching and now working as the artistic director of RDC Youth, Adam’s experience and vision within dance is inspiring. He is currently trying to raise money to support his next residency in Berlin where […]

Actor Spotlight: Sam Malley

Today’s actor spotlight is on Sam Malley, whose actor headshots I took last year. Whilst working with Sam on his actor headshots, I found him to be full of energy with a strong sense of professionalism throughout the whole session. Sam is a diverse young actor who isn’t afraid of a challenge and whose previous roles have varied from the heart throb to the villain. Though a particularly strong screen actor, Sam also has extensive stage experience with recent performances […]

Actor Spotlight: Torin Pocock

This week’s actor spotlight is on the charismatic, Torin Pocock. I have had the pleasure of working with Torin on several occasions as he keeps coming back for updates on his actor headshots. Torin primarily specialises in screen acting in which he has experience across a range of formats; from big screen productions at Pinewood, to commercials and short films. Spending part of last year in LA, Torin is now looking for an agent and did in fact have five […]

Got a DBS (CRB) Certificate?

Earlier this week I had a phone call from the picture desk at ITV for one of the most last minute jobs I’ve ever taken on. It seems they had had some difficulty finding a unit still photographer who has been CRB (now DBS) checked. I found this very surprising as I’ve been involved with so many productions with child actors and participants that it seems like such an obvious thing to have. Perhaps I’ve just found myself working with […]

Actor Spotlight: Laura Tipper

This week’s actor spotlight is on the fabulous Laura Tipper. Laura was one of the first actors to try out my latest location for actor headshots, ‘The Gem,’ and she was an absolute delight to work with. Very obviously a versatile actress, she was professional yet great fun to work with. Laura has just returned from Paris after training with the renowned Philippe Gaulier over two years and during the last year, Laura managed to squeeze in a national tour with physical theatre […]

Vieux Carré Theatre Photography

Theatre Photography: Vieux Carre

One of my favourite bits of theatre photography that I have done so far has come from photographing the performance of Vieux Carre at the Crescent Theatre in Birmingham. This was yet another great performance from the actors at the Birmingham School of Acting and it was accompanied by some lovely staging which always makes the photography pop even more. Below are the wonderful actors who took part with links to their Spotlight page, followed by several shots from the […]
