The 21st Screen Actors Guild Awards went underway yesterday with Birdman taking the coveted top honours of Best Cast in a Motion Picture, though the film’s lead, Michael Keaton, just missed out to Brit and Oscar favourite, Eddie Redmayne for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in the Theory of Everything. Unfortunately however, the brilliant biopic’s leading lady, Felicity Jones, couldn’t quite beat Julianne Moore to take the title of Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role, the latter claiming it for her performance in Still Alice.

There was tough competition for the Best Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series category with the likes of Game of Thrones and House of Cards going against the equally successful Boardwalk Empire and Homeland. Unfortunately for all of these great shows however, Downton Abbey pipped them to the post.

Other notable winners include Orange is the New Black which earned awards both for the best ensemble performance in a comedy but also for actress Uzo Aduba who took the award for best female performance in a comedy.

Viola Davis beat the brilliant performance of Tatiana Maslany in Orphan Black, as well as other favourites to claim the prize for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series, and the respective prize for best actor deservedly went to Kevin Spacey’s fantastic work as the ruthless Frank Underwood in the political thriller, House of Cards. If I could have things my way, I’d have struggled to separate both he and Peter Dinklage for the honour as the latter’s performance as Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones makes him one of the most memorable characters of the ensemble drama.

Being the stunt fan that I am (I used to want to be a stuntwoman once upon a time and still get pangs of jealousy when I see the cool stuff they get up to on set), it’s great to see action performances getting recognised. This year the honours went to the stunt ensembles from Unbroken and Game of Thrones.

So to conclude my flurry of BLOGS discussing Hollywood’s hotly anticipated awards season, the Oscars have finally been announced and I already can’t wait for the 22nd February to see host, Neil Patrick Harris, reveal the winners! If you’ve missed NPH’s ridiculously awesome hosting abilities, check out the opening numbers for the last few Tony Awards.

As predicted, there are many contenders whose nominations echo those of the Golden Globes: Winners Boyhood and The Grand Budapest Hotel, are joined by competition from The Imitation Game, The Theory of Everything, Foxcatcher and Selma, all of whom have been nominated for either the BAFTAS or the Golden Globes in the best film categories. However new to this particular pack of standout films, is Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper, and Whiplash, which also sees J.K. Simmons nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

Credit: Daniel McFadden

Dominating the nominations for the 87th annual Academy Awards are comedies, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and Birdman, who both have 9 nominations to their names, the latter of which sees Golden Globe winner, Michael Keaton, up for Best Actor again. Sadly Ralph Fiennes misses out at a chance for an Oscar for that esteemed category but in his place are Steve Carrell for Foxcatcher, Bradley Cooper for American Sniper, along with Golden Globe winner Eddie Redmayne for his outstanding performance as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything and close rival Benedict Cumberbatch as Alan Turing in Imitation Game.

Steve Carrell, Foxcatcher. Credit: Scott Garfield

Eddie Redmayne is joined by co-star Felicity Jones who is nominated for Best Actress though sadly the film didn’t make it into the either the Best Director or Best Original Screenplay categories. Coming nail-bitingly close to sealing nominations in all five of the major categories is Birdman, narrowly missing out without a nomination in the run for Best Actress.

Michael Keaton, Birdman.

Finally, like with the BAFTAS, Marvel’s brilliantly made, Guardians of the Galaxy is only up for the same two awards of Best Make-up and Hair Styling, and Best Visual Effects. The lavish styling behind The Grand Budapest Hotel could be it’s biggest rival for the Make-up and Hair category and it’s going against it’s fellow Marvel brethren, X-Men: Days of Future Past and Captain America: Winter Soldier for Best VFX.

Credit: Me!

Below you’ll find all of this year’s outstanding Oscar nominations though as ever, it’s disheartening to see such a huge array of categories missing one very important role: the stills photographer! With the Oscars covering everything including acting, directing, writing, editing, make-up, costume and special effects, why is there still no category recognising the work of the photographers who capture those iconic moments that films are often remembered for? Even in the Key Art Awards, the photographer is often over looked, even if it’s their production still that makes it to the poster that goes on to win the award.

But anyway, that’s a rant for another blog….

Here’s a round-up of all the highlights!

As with the upcoming BAFTAS, Boyhood, saw 5 nominations from which it managed to secure 3 Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture Drama, Best Director with Richard Linklater, and Best Supporting Actress for Patricia Arquette.

As hoped by myself, the incredibly talented Eddie Redmayne beat fellow Brit, Benedict Cumberbatch to the Best Actor (Drama) award. That’s not to say I don’t at all have a total ‘thing’ for Benedict who is a great performer in his own right, it’s just that quite frankly, Eddie Redmayne blows me away and I doubt anyone can fail to be impressed by his performance in The Theory of Everything.

Wes Anderson’s Grand Budapest Hotel took the award for Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) though its star, Ralph Fiennes, unfortunately couldn’t beat Michael Keaton’s performance in Birdman for the award for Best Actor in that genre.

As for TV, The Affair took both the Best Actress (Ruth Wilson) and the Best Drama Series awards, beating my favourite shows of all time; Game of Thrones and House of Cards, though Kevin Spacey deservedly won Best Actor in a Drama for his outstanding performance in the latter, conquering a seven-time losing streak.

Again, my favourite nomination for the Best Comedy Series, Orange is the New Black, didn’t quite make the grade and was beaten my Amazon original, Transparent which is arguably raising the bar for programming with its sincere look at sexual identity. The show’s star, Jeffrey Tambor also took the award for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical and dedicated his win to the transgender community.

Another winner to give an emotional speech and to steer the Twittersphere into talking about serious issues rather than what the ladies were wearing as seems to be the key topic of discussion these days, was Downton Abbey’s Joanne Froggatt who took the award for Best Supporting Actress.

With the Golden Globe winners announced last night and the BAFTAS on the horizon, let’s not forget about the often over-looked, Key Art Awards.

The Key Art Awards is entertainment’s most recognised competition for advertising and communications across every medium you can think of. Everything from the more obvious forms of advertising such as trailers and poster art/one-sheets, to creative social, TV spot and display campaigns – everything that goes into attracting an audience. Without the creative minds behind the marketing campaigns, cinema would not be as successful as it is today, and it’s great to see this side of the creative process recognised.

You can check out the huge list of award winners across all of the categories here:

http://www.keyartaward.com/

Being a unit stills photographer and keen studio shooter, I was most interested in the 46 winners of the printed medium – the poster art. There are so many great winners this year but Godzilla was slightly ahead of the pack, being recognised for 4 awards. Paying homage to the Japanese origins of the story, many of the posters for Godzilla chose to take a graphic approach over a photographic one and give the one-sheets a style one might expect to see in a manga. Manga is something I’m recently discovering an appreciation for though more for the artwork than the story, so perhaps this is why I particularly like the middle image, which won ‘Best Theatrical Festival One-Sheet.’

Following closely behind Godzilla is The Hunger Games with 3 entries into the awards, and with its ‘District Heroes’ campaign taking gold in the Theatrical Domestic One-Sheet category. I personally really love the images put out for the Hunger Games and in fact think the concept behind the entire campaign is nothing short of genius. Each series of the one-sheets acts as a propaganda campaign ostensibly created by the opposing sides of Snow’s Capitol and the rebellion, with the latter having Katniss Everdeen as their poster girl. Making it into the 2014 Key Art Awards for print are propagandist posters seemingly created by Snow, whose penchant for manipulation and indoctrination come through in an unsettling way as he appears to hail the citizens of Panem’s compartmentalised districts. Whereas we are normally introduced to films by a poster, trailer or other form of media directly telling us about it; the campaign behind The Hunger Games franchise completely removes the fourth wall and as a result is much more successful in drawing us in (I know I was at least). Lionsgate’s creative campaign strategy doesn’t however limit itself to posters – check out the huge array of propagandist videos, websites and installations that really give the impression that the war going on in the films, isn’t entirely fictitious.

Despite feeling the need to back my fellow photographers, the rest of the stand-out posters for me are from graphic artists, though saying that, I must tip my metaphorical hat to Giles Keyte for his excellent shot of a contemplative Brad Pitt against a foreboding sky for Fury. Definitely a film on my to-watch list.

Though it’s been a while since I’ve been an avid watcher of The Simpsons, its recent advertising campaigns have been nothing if not viral, at least in the US anyway. Making it into the Key Art Awards for print are two posters for the show which have clear fine art influences; as if to imply that the Simpsons have a modicum of culture between them. The juxtaposition of the characters’ often simple and slapstick humour being advertising through fine art inspirations is actually quite effective, and the family’s instantly recognisable colours and signature features seem to be the only thing we need to see to know what’s being advertised. That’s when you know a cartoon is successful. That and the fact that FXX have recently paid $750 million for exclusive rights to all 552 episodes, which it brag about with the campaign hashtag; #everysimpsonsever. Below are the two images that took silver for being the best bus shelter artwork.

Still looking at graphic art is Concept Arts’ one-sheet for The Mule, which successfully makes my stomach knot and makes it clear that the film is nothing to do with the equine version of its title. My morbid curiosity has certainly been piqued with this one and Concept Arts get a silver award for it in the category of Theatrical Festival One-Sheet.

With the show being centred on a war between humanity and angels, it’s no surprise to see the one-sheets for Dominion putting a modern, and seemingly sinful twist on paintings that look like they could have been crafted by Leonardo Da Vinci. It’s great imagery like this that makes me want to subscribe to the Syfy channel.

Finally, though not winning an award, there’s no surprise that the poster for Nurse 3D has been listed as a finalist; despite its lack of originality, everyone knows sex sells, and besides, what’s not to love about a hot latex-clad nurse straddling a phallic object? Effective but playing it decidedly safe as far as creativity goes.

It’s that time of year again – the awards season is upon us and today, the 2015 BAFTA nominations have been announced!

The Grand Budapest Hotel is the front runner of this year’s awards with 11 nominations, including Best Film and Ralph Fiennes for Best Actor. I personally love this movie. Director Wes Anderson and cinematographer Robert Yeoman, both also up for nominations, have created, in my opinion, one of the most beautifully shot films of the year and I have my fingers crossed that it’s highly stylised execution will be met with as much appreciation as its excellent script writing and acting.

Falling just behind the Grand Budapest Hotel with 10 nominations is Birdman; a film I have not yet seen but is currently at the top of my to-watch list. The all-star cast includes Michael Keaton who is in tough competition for the Best Actor category, as well as co-stars Emma Stone and Edward Norton, who are up for Best Supporting Actress and Actor respectively.

In joint second place, again with 10 nominations, is The Theory of Everything which I absolutely cannot wait to see; partly because I worked briefly on it during pre-production camera tests, and partly because I am a great admirer of both Professor Stephen Hawking and the incredible acting of Eddie Redmayne who is quite deservedly up for Best Actor for his portrayal of the living legend himself.

As with the Golden Globe nominations, Eddie Redmayne is yet again vying for the Best Actor Award with Benedict Cumberbatch and his portrayal of Alan Turing in The Imitation Game. The Imitation Game is nominated for 9 awards including Outstanding British Film.

Credit: Liam Daniels

Rounding off the Best Film category is Oscar favourite, Boyhood, with 5 nominations. Perhaps a disappointment with its film-makers but still, Richard Linklater is at least up for Best Director. Boyhood is being re-released to UK cinemas next week and I for one will be checking it out.

Other films up for awards include Whiplash; which sees nominations for JK Simmons for Best Supporting Actor; as well as entering into the running for awards in the directing, original screenplay, editing and sound categories.

Surprisingly, Interstellar and Gone Girl were towards the bottom of the list with them being nominated for just 4 and 2 awards respectively, though thankfully one of Gone Girl’s nominations is rightly for Rosamund Pike as Best Actress.

Sandwiched between Interstellar and Gone Girl, and another one on my to-watch list is Pride with just 3 nominations, including Imelda Staunton for Best Supporting Actress. Pride is based on the true story of the ‘Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners’ movement (LGSM) and is full of inspirational and feel-good vibes that begs the question of why the story hadn’t been brought to cinema faster.

Finally, I’m disappointed to see Guardians of the Galaxy only nominated for 2 awards though non-surprisingly it’s for its incredible hair and make-up and visual effects. If only there was a soundtrack category.

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team – the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill find himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of desperate misfits – Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand – with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.

Only two days left until Marvel’s latest action movie hits the big screen! Guardians of the Galaxy has already been well received by critics, deeming it ‘Marvel’s riskiest but most surprising success yet’ (Matt Risley, Total Film).

As a huge fan of Marvel’s already established throng of super-hero blockbusters, I cannot wait to check out Guardians of the Galaxy. This time I have the added bonus of knowing I was a part of the process (albeit for one day)! Sadly, Marvel have only released two of my stills from the film (which you can check out HERE) but there are plenty to see from Jay Maidment (the awesome unit stills photographer behind this and many of Marvel’s other films) which you can find all over the official Facebook page for the movie as well as on IMDB. Alternatively, head on over to the official website for more goodies!

Book your tickets now – I know I am!

Casting Calls: Male Aged 30-45 for Short Film

Warhol is an award winning dark comedic script with a run time of 15 minutes, during which it holds a mirror up to the celebrity obsessed world within which we live. How far will a person go, or allow themselves to be pushed in order to achieve their fifteen minutes of fame? ‘Warhol’ demonstrates how the media can influence, and in this case manipulate their audience, at times with disturbing consequences.

You will be working with an award winning script and a team that have worked on the following programmes. A Director, who has worked on everything from Robin Hood Prince of Thieves to Mr Selfridge. Craig Shaynak – You may know him from the hit show ‘Ray Donovan.’ Anil Desai – The Kumars (BBC) Stuart White Nichols – BBC Timothy David – HBO’s Game Of Thrones, Benjamin Crellin – Xena Warrior Princess and Young Hercules. Thomas Johnson – Art Director on the last four JLS Videos. And me… Adam, who’s written for The BBC, Buena Vista, ITV and others. We also have a genuine hollywood actor reading for the lead.

Character: Dave Dawson

Must be American or Canadian! Must! Age 30 – 45. Dave is a Howard Stern wannabe. Banned from broadcasting in America after a stunt backfired, Dave jumped the pond in search of a fresh start, forcing him to take a job at a small regional station in East Anglia where his right-wing, straight talking persona is more than the suburban town can handle. The lack of night owls, insomniacs and lovelorn housewives, means he is having trouble flexing his tabloid muscles.

Pay: £60 p/day

Shoot Date: 4th Nov 2013 – 6th Nov 2013
