<p>Being a stills photographer, one thing you learn is that you often have no idea which images have been used for a production unless you track them down yourself, and though you might expect an advertising photographer to shoot the poster if you haven&#8217;t been offered the job yourself, sometimes it&#8217;s your unit stills that make it instead, like for my first ever movie poster for the film, Billionaire Ransom. </p>

<p>Waaaay back in 2014 &#8211; though in all honesty, it feels a lot longer ago than that &#8211; I worked on one of my first ever serious feature films as the main unit stills photographer. I was as green as a grasshopper back then, having only worked on bits and pieces here and there, or assisting some of the industry&#8217;s best still photographers. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1024" height="684" src="https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_unitstills_06-1024x684.jpg" alt="Unit stills photography from the movie, Billionaire Ransom, AKA Take Down" class="wp-image-6649" srcset="https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_unitstills_06-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_unitstills_06-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_unitstills_06-768x513.jpg 768w, https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_unitstills_06-800x534.jpg 800w, https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_unitstills_06.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>There was that *one* movie I did around 2012 but we aren&#8217;t going to talk about that one; it was a straight to DVD flop that involved a very shady producer who didn&#8217;t believe in paying his crew so as far as I&#8217;m concerned, it doesn&#8217;t count.</p>

<p>So I cut my teeth on Billionaire Ransom &#8211; at the time of shooting called &#8216;Take Down,&#8217; -and it was my first proper movie all to my self with proper producers, a proper director in the form of Jim Gillespie, and proper crew, some of whom, I have remained very good friends with to this day.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="599" src="https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_unitstills_08-1024x599.jpg" alt="Unit still photography from the movie, Billionaire Ransom." class="wp-image-6650" srcset="https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_unitstills_08-1024x599.jpg 1024w, https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_unitstills_08-300x176.jpg 300w, https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_unitstills_08-768x449.jpg 768w, https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_unitstills_08-800x468.jpg 800w, https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_unitstills_08.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Why am I reminiscing about a job I worked on over 6 years ago? I happened to stumble across a poster I never knew existed! </p>

<p>Every now and then it&#8217;s good to do a quick Google search to see what unit stills have surfaced from jobs. Some productions are great and they put out loads of content that you can share and use in your portfolio (shout out to the AMAZING Outlander team over at Starz!). Others, not so much. Most of the time your stills photography won&#8217;t get released until 12+ months after you took the pictures in the first place and by that time you&#8217;ve moved onto the next job so it can be easy to forget to check and share past work. Which is a reminder to myself to do this more often!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="691" height="1024" src="https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_poster_01-691x1024.jpg" alt="Movie poster for Billionaire Ransom" class="wp-image-6505" srcset="https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_poster_01-691x1024.jpg 691w, https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_poster_01-202x300.jpg 202w, https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_poster_01-768x1138.jpg 768w, https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_poster_01-800x1186.jpg 800w, https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_poster_01.jpg 1012w" sizes="(max-width: 691px) 100vw, 691px" /></figure>

<p>Anyway, Billionaire Ransom was a fun jaunt around the Isle of Man and gave me the opportunity to grab shots whilst dangling off a cliff, being out at sea and tied to a tree so I could shoot from an embankment above the camera crew when there wasn&#8217;t enough space for even this tiny stills photographer. </p>

<p>This movie was also my first experience shooting action and I was ever so proud of myself for managing to get a series of images of a gun-wielding bunch of hostage-takers when there were 3 operators running around handheld in the tiniest room imaginable. Luckily, I came out of the fray with only one black eye and today I am grateful for LCD screens so we can have a bit more peripheral vision than we did back in the days of DSLRs and sound blimps!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="681" src="https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_unitstills_04-1024x681.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-6638" srcset="https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_unitstills_04-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_unitstills_04-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_unitstills_04-768x511.jpg 768w, https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_unitstills_04-800x532.jpg 800w, https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_unitstills_04.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Being my first proper movie, I learned a lot and I&#8217;m grateful to my client for taking a leap of faith with someone so early on in their career. Every production, even now, is a new opportunity to learn and improve, whether that&#8217;s to improve technically, artistically or learn to better understand and navigate on set politics, or practical logistics. </p>

<p>Believe it or not, and as daft as it sounds, one of my biggest takeaways from being the unit stills photographer for this film was the usefulness of pop-up tents! After going on to shoot several seasons of Outlander up in the challengingly wet and muddy conditions of Scotland, it was good to remember how the camera crew on Take Down brought several pop-up tents that they could stash their cameras in when we were filming out on the cliffs!</p>

<p>I also remember this movie being my first introduction to &#8216;rain.&#8217; Back then I had blimps to keep my cameras dry but I had definitely not learned to always keep a wet-weather bag with me with waterproofs, even in summer! Luckily, I was able to shoot on a long enough lens to stay out of the main part of the deluge!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="681" src="https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_unitstills_05-1024x681.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-6635" srcset="https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_unitstills_05-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_unitstills_05-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_unitstills_05-768x511.jpg 768w, https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_unitstills_05-800x532.jpg 800w, https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_unitstills_05.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="651" src="https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_unitstills_03-1024x651.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-6636" srcset="https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_unitstills_03-1024x651.jpg 1024w, https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_unitstills_03-300x191.jpg 300w, https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_unitstills_03-768x488.jpg 768w, https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_unitstills_03-800x509.jpg 800w, https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TakeDown_unitstills_03.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Back then, I didn&#8217;t know there was a difference between the stills photographer who shot the unit coverage (the actual filming process) and the photographer, often an advertising photographer, who was responsible for shooting the elements for the poster. Sometimes a movie will get their still photographer to do the studio shoot for the poster, other times they will bring in someone who specialises in advertising photography. For some others, like in the case of Billionaire Ransom, the poster will be made up of several unit stills that were taken over the course of filming. </p>

<p>I love studios shoots as you get to really flex your skills as a photographer as the lighting and directing falls on your shoulders as well as the actual shooting. That said, there is something special about images captured in the moment and often these make for the more impacting posters, as the energy is far more real. The actors were there in that moment of emotion and action; not trying to recreate it in a clinical studio without the ambience of a set or support of other cast.</p>

<p>Poster shoots have their own challenges compared to the unit photography. I recently worked on a big US show as both the unit photographer and the gallery photographer (&#8216;gallery&#8217; and &#8216;specials&#8217; are other names for the poster shoots for a production) and both had their difficulties to overcome. I&#8217;ll be writing a blog post about it as soon as the images are released so stay tuned!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="512" src="https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/AimeeSpinks_UnitStills_Photographer_2014-1024x512.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-6640" srcset="https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/AimeeSpinks_UnitStills_Photographer_2014-1024x512.jpg 1024w, https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/AimeeSpinks_UnitStills_Photographer_2014-300x150.jpg 300w, https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/AimeeSpinks_UnitStills_Photographer_2014-768x384.jpg 768w, https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/AimeeSpinks_UnitStills_Photographer_2014-800x400.jpg 800w, https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/AimeeSpinks_UnitStills_Photographer_2014.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Thanks to camera operator, Xandy Sahla for these snaps of me whilst we were filming in the forest!</figcaption></figure>

<p>Anywho, despite working on &#8216;Billionaire Ransom&#8217; being a huge step beyond my comfort zone at the time, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and came away with great memories, improved skills and more knowledge to take me into my next job!</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Back in June, I got in touch with legendary stills photographer, David Appleby, to see if there was any chance I might be able to assist him during any of his upcoming work. I am a HUGE fan of David’s photography and his prowess with a camera has seen him work on over seventy different feature films across a 40 year career. Shooting the likes of Brad Pitt, Robert Downey Junior and Arnold Schwarzennegar, David has worked with legendary directors including Stephen Spielberg and Ridley Scott to produce some of the most iconic film stills to some of the greatest movies made.</p>
<p>Despite the glitz and glamour of his work, David remains an absolutely lovely guy with a humble appreciation of all those who work in the industry and those who aspire to do so. Seeing an eager eyed photographer keen to step up in her career and learn from the best, David very kindly invited me to shadow him for a day on the set of Ralph Fiennes’s latest feature film, ‘The Invisible Woman,’ which he both directs and stars in alongside the beautiful Felicty Jones and, Game of Thrones actress, Michelle Fairley.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><div id="attachment_2136" style="width: 630px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/DICKENS_open_2792179b.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2136" class="size-full wp-image-2136" src="https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/DICKENS_open_2792179b.jpg" alt="Credit: David Appleby" width="620" height="387" srcset="https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/DICKENS_open_2792179b.jpg 620w, https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/DICKENS_open_2792179b-300x187.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-2136" class="wp-caption-text">Credit: David Appleby</p></div></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The day itself was one out at an exterior location in Harrow where the weather was feeling somewhat schizophrenic and couldn’t decide whether it should rain down a storm or keep us roasting in the sun. It was a fantastic day and I took the most of the opportunity to bombard the ever patient David with questions. He gave me great advice both on the business end of high level stills work and also about on set etiquette and general workflow from shooting to delivery that has been absolutely invaluable to me. By the end of the day’s filming, I had David so fuelled up on coffee that he invited me back for another few days of filming later that month, as well as negotiating me a paid position on the specials shoot as his assistant photographer.</p>
<p>The advertising shoot was done at Sands Studio in London with art direction from Mia Matson from The Creative Partnership. I took care of sourcing all the equipment we would need and once again ended up renting most of it through The Flash Centre – a rental house I highly recommend with branches in London, Birmingham and Leeds. They were both cheaper and better stocked than rival rental houses and enabled us to get everything we needed at very short notice.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><div id="attachment_2137" style="width: 810px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/invisible-woman3.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2137" class="size-full wp-image-2137" src="https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/invisible-woman3.jpg" alt="Credit: David Appleby" width="800" height="532" srcset="https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/invisible-woman3.jpg 800w, https://www.aimeespinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/invisible-woman3-300x199.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-2137" class="wp-caption-text">Credit: David Appleby</p></div></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>We checked out Sands Studio the night before and whilst David checked things over with the proprietor, I got to work rigging up the backgrounds and lights for the first of the shots. Satisfied everything was ready to go for the morning we headed back to the hotel for a good night’s kip!</p>
<p>The day of the shoot we got there nice and early to do our final checks and thus began a day of nailing the shots to be used in the movie’s ad campaign. We hit a few technical glitches on occasion, mainly with the radio flash triggers but we were able to overcome them and finished the day on time with Ralph, David and Mia, happy with what we had shot. Though a thoroughly exhausting day of moving lights and equipment about, it was also thoroughly enjoyable. I learned a huge amount and also had the opportunity to impress Ralph and Mia with both my technical help when things went wrong, but also my creative eye in suggesting ideas for shots. The whole team were lovely to work with and the highlight of the day was getting a photo with Ralph as I stood in for Felicity during a test shot. I’ll have to see if I can get permission from Ralph before I can pop it up on the blog but until then I’m afraid it will have to remain safe and secret on my hard drive!</p>
<p>Working with David and the rest of the crew and cast of, ‘The Invisible Woman,’ was an absolutely amazing experience. I learned more in those few days than I ever thought possible and more importantly, I’ve made a great friend in David whom was kind enough to invite me to his wedding a few weeks ago.<br />
I look forward to working with David again next week on the specials shoot for, ‘Belle,’ starring Tom Felton, Emily Watson and Miranda Richardson and will no doubt write another blog about that shoot shortly after!</p>
<p>In the meantime, why not pop down to Swanage and check out David’s exhibition of iconic stills from Pink Floyd’s, ‘The Wall,’ showing now at the Photographers’ Lounge Gallery!</p>
